Talk Nerdy to Me for the week of June 22, 2019

June 23, 2019

We're back with another episode of Talk Nerdy to Me. We discuss the pop culture happenings for the week. This week was a bit of a slow week for Nerdy News, but there are a coupla things that happened.

The new Men In Black International movie is not doing well at the box office. They just can't quite replicate the chemistry that Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith have together.

Marvel is releasing a new version of Avengers End Game with deleted footage and more after credits. Seems like a blatant attempt to dethrone Avatar from highest grossing movie.

More Keanu news. Marvel is in talks to have Keanu in one of their movies. He is the hottest thing in media right now so it is a good move. They need to think very carefully about what character he will be. If they choose the right character for him, it will be iconic. What character would you have Keanu Reeves portray in the MCU?

We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts. If they are good, we will use them on the show. The number is (575) 323-1332.

This Week in Nerd June 14 2019

This Week in Nerd June 14 2019

June 14, 2019

We are going to a different format with the show. It was decided that a review of the cool nerdy stuff from the week would be more entertaining than talking about shows that not a lot of people are watching.

This is the inaugural episode of This Week in Nerd. Patrick and I will ramble on about what we think is the most interesting pop culture goodness from the week.

This week we focus a lot of E3 because... well because E3 is pretty awesome. One of the big announcements was Cyberpunk 2077 with Keanu Reeves voicing one of the main characters. Keanu is a real hot commodity right now. He has been around for a long time, but the success of John Wick has catapulted him to one of the biggest names in Hollywood right now.

E3 also saw the new Star Wars game teaser. about 14 minutes of game play were shown. From everything we saw it looks like it will be worthy of carrying the Star Wars name.

We also talk a little about the new Galaxy's Edge area at Disney Land. It looks AMAZING! We are both waiting until the Disney World park opens their own Galaxy's Edge area before we go.

Let us know what you think about the new format for the show. You can also leave your comments about all the cool E3 announcements.

We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts. If they are good, we will use them on the show. The number is (575) 323-1332.

SYFY | HAPPY! Season 2 Episode 8 | A Friend of Death | Kinda spoilery review

SYFY | HAPPY! Season 2 Episode 8 | A Friend of Death | Kinda spoilery review

June 8, 2019

Season 2 of Happy ended on a really good note. All the different story-lines got tied up all nice and neat. They even segued perfectly into Season 3.

Sonny got his Easter extravaganza on air with the help of Orcus. Sonny was oblivious to the fact that Orcus was plotting his demise on national TV. Orcus was also using Smoothie to have Sonny murdered. Smoothie groomed Hailey to do the murder as his plot for revenge on Nick.

Nick was able to overcome the drugs Smoothie used to incapacitate him. Nick dove in front of the bullet Hailey fired to kill Sonny. Then Hailey's mom killed Sonny, thus preventing her from becoming a murderer (unless you count Nick). Nick ended up dying from the bullet, but Orcus intercepted him on his way to the big orgy in the sky. Orcus talked Nick into going back to life in order to exact revenge upon Smoothie (in exchange for working for Orcus).

The season finale was a great way to end a season that had so many subplots. We also got to have Jeff Goldblum as God, nice touch. SYFY recently announced they would not be picking up Happy for a season 3. Let's hope someone nabs that license. I can't wait to see a Halloween version of Happy!

We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts.  If they are good, we will use them on the show.  The number is (575) 323-1332.

Phoenix Fan Fusion post review

Phoenix Fan Fusion post review

June 6, 2019

Phoenix Fan Fusion 2019 was a great event in our eyes. The only bad that we saw was getting entry into the event. Ever since they caught a crazy guy trying to get in with weapons to injure one of the featured guests, security has been a nightmare. They have been trying different things to make getting into the event a much quicker and smoother process while still maintaining safety to the best of their abilities.

Some people had to wait a looonnggg time to get in. This makes those attendees a bit testy and frustrated. Lucky the weather cooperated and it wasn't as hot as the surface of the sun outside like in past years. Other than that, everything was good for us.

The featured guest line up was great. The vendors were awesome. The Hall of Heroes was phenomenal. Phoenix is one of our favorite cons to attend. Can't wait to see how they tackle the issue of getting the crowds of attendees into the event quicker and more efficiently next year.

We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts.  If they are good, we will use them on the show.  The number is (575) 323-1332.

DC Universe | Doom Patrol | Ezekiel Patrol | Episode 15 | kinda spoilery review

DC Universe | Doom Patrol | Ezekiel Patrol | Episode 15 | kinda spoilery review

June 3, 2019

Well, we finally made it to the end of Doom Patrol season 1. There were a lot of ups and downs and way too much Cyborg. Overall, we were underwhelmed by this first season.

By now you should know we are not fans of having Cyborg appear in this series. It always felt kinda forced. There is no real comic book history to support his being there either. It's like they were trying to leverage his name to boost the show. It didn't work for us. Hopefully someone will make an edit of the season that contains NO Cyborg.

We were really hooked with the first few episodes. The story was shaping up like a typical reluctant superhero show. Then somewhere in the middle of the season it went off the rails. They lost focus on saving the Chief. A lot of the episodes were just Chief's freaky friend of the week. Maybe 15 episodes were too much. They could have edited the whole thing down to 10 episodes and it would have been better.

Episode 14 gave us hope. Finally Mr Nobody broke the fourth wall again and agreed with us that there was a lot of character driven drivel and not much in the way of them looking for Chief. He even ripped Cyborg's face off the Doom Patrol poster. Yes! we felt vindicated. They even put another Animal Mineral Vegetable Man reference in the episode.

That turned out to be false hope though. Episode 15, the final episode, was a bit lackluster. The Doom Patrol has tracked Mr Nobody and the Chief to the white space. The white space is the border area of the comics where there is no content. Rita figures out the true power in the white space is being able to narrate the story.

Mr Nobody may have bitten off more than he can chew in this episode. Ezekiel (cockroach) and Admiral Whiskers (rat) are towering all powerful monsters on Danny Street. Mr Nobody has to work with the Doom Patrol to escape. They all finally escape, but they seem to be tiny and it looks like Danny the Street has become Danny the Brick.

We believe Doom Patrol has some great characters. The story just seemed to ramble along on no certain path. Some of the episodes could be removed completely and have no effect on the plot. They could definitely take Cyborg out completely. Episode 14 would have been a much better season ender. DCU will be hard pressed to entice us into watching season 2.

May 27, 2019

Smoothie has sunk his claws deep into Hailey. He has turned her completely against her parents. Smoothie is programming Hailey to be an assassin for him. This helps Smoothie out on so many levels. He gets to please Orcus, He gets rid of Sonny Shine, and most of all he gets revenge on Nick.

Amanda's water breaks and Orcus gets her to the hospital with the Wishees in tow.

Nick get caught in one of Smoothie's traps and is arrested. Of course they beat the crap out of him. McCarthy does some unspeakable stuff to get him out of jail. They team up again to go after Smoothie and save Hailey.

Some of the weirdness is starting to make sense. Now we know the Wishees are like minions of Orcus. We know that Sonny blackmailed his way into his position. We know that Amanda is pregnant with a Wishee baby. The only thing I am not sure of yet, is why is Happy still around if Hailey doesn't believe in him any more? Hopefully that will be explained before end of the season.

Are you still liking Happy!? Is it just enough weird to keep you watching? Or have you tuned out on this show? Let us know in the comments.

We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts.  If they are good, we will use them on the show.  The number is (575) 323-1332.

Aladdin movie spoiler free review and audience reaction at Alamo Drafthouse

Aladdin movie spoiler free review and audience reaction at Alamo Drafthouse

May 26, 2019

When they announced a live action remake of Disney's beloved Aladdin, I have to admit I was a bit skeptical. They did a great job with Jungle Book, but dropped the ball with Dumbo.

Then the early trailers showing an extremely blue Will Smith had a lot of people up in arms. The backlash from that trailer online was crazy.

I walked into Aladdin expecting to be underwhelmed. After the first 20 minutes I have to admit I was really liking the direction they were taking. There were a few changes from the original cartoon, but that is okay. I don't want to see a scene for scene reshoot of something I have already seen.

There were some new characters and some new songs. I particularly like how they made Jasmine a much more independent and strong female character rather than just the object of Aladdin's affection.

I also like that they didn't whitewash the movie. They didn't go out and cast a bunch of popular white characters to try to sell the movie on their names. For me, it made the movie that much better.

Let's talk about Will Smith as the Genie. Robin Williams left some big shoes to fill in that role. I was concerned if Will Smith was up to the task of making the character his own while still paying homage to the original frantic nature that Robin Williams brought to the table. Overall, I was very impressed with Will Smith's version of the Genie. He brought just enough crazy to counter-balance the all powerful aspect. I really connected with the Genie and found him to be a likeable character. Kudos to Will Smith.

You don't have to take my word for it though. All of the audience members we spoke to, both young and old, really enjoyed Aladdin. It was a great movie from beginning to end. If you like the classic Disney cartoons, you won't be disappointed with this live action remake.

We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts. If they are good, we will use them on the show. The number is (575) 323-1332.

DC Universe | Doom Patrol | Penultimate Patrol | Episode 14 | kinda spoilery review

DC Universe | Doom Patrol | Penultimate Patrol | Episode 14 | kinda spoilery review

May 23, 2019

This episode is titled "Penultimate Patrol". I had to look up the meaning of that word. Now that I know the definition, the title is very fitting. Penultimate just means next to last. As this is the next to last episode... I get the joke.

Just when we thought we were rid of Cyborg, they bring him back in. Why must DC punish us?

We get a little bit of the impetus behind why Eric Morden became Mr. Nobody...unless that is just something he made up to help bait his trap for Doom Patrol.

Cyborg re-installs GRID and is able to locate the Beard Hunter using the tracking device Rita planted on him. They find that he is now a resident of Danny the Street.

Jane was about to torture some answers out of the Beard Hunter when Danny the Street confessed he knew where Chief was being held. Mr. Nobody had him in the white space on the comic book pages. The place where there is no content.

Flex Mentallo is able to open a portal into the white space (after a brief mistake of flexing the wrong muscle and causing a little inadvertent pleasure). Once inside the white space the Doom Patrol confronts Mr. Nobody. They believe they have defeated him only to find out it was part of his plan.

Mr. Nobody convinces Chief the only way to escape is to "Let the truth set you free". Chief agonizes over this decision, but ultimately comes clean with the group. The accidents that gave them powers and changed their lives forever.... weren't accidents! The Chief orchestrated each event.

Will the group support Chief? Will they leave him with Mr. Nobody? Will they rage and destroy the Chief in front of Mr. Nobody (which is probably what he wants anyway? Let us know in the comments.

We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts.  If they are good, we will use them on the show.  The number is (575) 323-1332.

SYFY | HAPPY! Season 2 Episode 7 | Kinda spoilery review

SYFY | HAPPY! Season 2 Episode 7 | Kinda spoilery review

May 21, 2019

Episode 7 is a roller coaster ride of weirdness. Nick kidnaps his ex-wife, who is pregnant. We don't know who impregnated her yet, it is kinda hard to tell in the middle of a latex orgy.

Orcus and Sonny want her back since she is instrumental to both of their Easter plans. Although, their plans differ just a bit from each other.

Hailey is upset that her parents are keeping things from her. That is the final straw that breaks her and she runs to Smoothie as she views him as the only one being truthful to her.

Meanwhile, Happy is being taught the facts of life by Bo Peep. Happy is kinda clingy afterwards and Bo Peep takes off.

Can't wait to see how the Wishees tie in to all of this weirdness. They have already established a connection between them and Orcus throughout history. They have obviously been grooming Sonny Shine to be the sacrificial lamb for him for quite some time. Really interested to see how they bring this season to a close.

DC Universe | Doom Patrol | Flex Patrol | Episode 13 | kinda spoilery review

DC Universe | Doom Patrol | Flex Patrol | Episode 13 | kinda spoilery review

May 17, 2019

Last episode our intrepid heroes busted Cyborg...and Flex Mentallo... out of the Ant Farm.

Rita talks Cyborg into re-installing his GRID operating system after the nanites start turning him more into a robot than human. Cyborg decides to stay with his dad in the hospital after nearly beating him to death when Mr Nobody got into his head. Rita stays with Cyborg to help him through this tough time.

Meanwhile, back at the mansion... Jane and Robot Man try to get Flex's memory to kick in. They do everything they can think of to trigger his memory. The only thing that works is bringing his wife back to him. Short lived reunion as she has had her body wired so if she comes back in contact with Flex, she dies.

We also find out that Larry and the Negative Spirit are in a symbiotic relationship. They need each other to survive.

The best part is when Mr Nobody gives his soliloquy at the end. Everything he says proves we have been right all season long. He says the past episodes have all been character driven drivel. He rips Cyborgs face off the Doom Patrol ad. He even promises we will be getting more superheroes doing superhero stuff! Can't wait!

Do you agree with us that we have sat through enough backstory and should start seeing the Doom Patrol start doing heroic things to stop Mr Nobody? Let us know in the comments.

We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts.  If they are good, we will use them on the show.  The number is (575) 323-1332.
